Ok so I’ve been reading a lot of blogs, books, articles, etc. lately and I’ve noticed something. Most of them say to look for a little symbol on the bottom of plastics that means that the container is food safe and good for food storage. (as in Prepping type storage).
Most of the prepping sites tell you to look for a little triangle symbol with a 1 in the middle and underneath it says PETE.
However, I started looking at the containers that were already being used for long term storage of various foods and they said 2 and HDPE.
So I went and found a chart on what these symbols (they are recycling codes) actually mean and which were truly safe to use.
What I found was that while the ones numbered 1 were indeed safe for food storage, they were really only made for short term, single use stuffs. Bacterial growth and leaching are at increased risk if you use these for long term storage.
From what this says, and what the site says, you are better off using the number 2 HDPE plastics for long term storage.
Live and learn, I guess. 🙂
